冷杉林帶就像是大自然的一個神奇角落，通常藏身在海拔3100-3600公尺的山區，溫度大約在5-8度左右。
這裡的主角是臺灣冷杉 (Abies kawakwmii)，形成了一片獨特的樹海景觀。除了冷杉，還可以看到玉山杜鵑 (Rhododendron pseudochrysanthum)、玉山圓柏 (Juniperus squamata) 等植物在這裡生長。冷杉林帶的邊緣和玉山箭竹 (Yushania niitakayamensis) 的高山草原形成鮮明對比。
當我們走進冷杉林下，會看到完全不同的景觀。因為冷杉樹高大、樹冠茂密，所以林下相對潮濕陰暗。因此成為各種高山蕨類和濕生性草本植物的天堂，比如臺灣鬼督郵 (Ainsliaea latifolia subsp. henryi)、三萼花草 (Triplostegia glandulifera)、掌葉毛茛 (Ranunculus cheirophyllus)、臺灣鹿藥 (Maianthemum formosanum)、玉山櫻草(Primula miyabeana)、玉山燈心草 (Juncus triflorus)、玉山卷耳(Cerastium trigynum var. morrisonense)及玉山筷子芥(Arabidopsis lyrata ssp. kamchatica) 等。此外，還有一些高山蘭花也在這裡綻放。
說到冷杉的純林，許多人心中想到的應該就是雪山的黑森林，那是前往雪山主峰的必經之路，也是冷杉林帶的經典代表區域。
冷杉林帶展現了高山特有的生態風貌，吸引了很多自然愛好者前來探險，美麗的巒大花楸(Sorbus randaiensis) 也是冷杉林帶常見的樹木點綴了這片區域，就像是大自然的一幅畫，吸引著許多自然愛好者前來探索。
